Amager Beach is a long sandy beach, and one of the best beaches around Copenhagen. It lies on the east coast of Amager Island, five kilometers from central Copenhagen. Or seven minutes if you take the Metro.
The beach is divided into two main parts.
There is the old beach that runs along Amager Strandvej (Amager Beach Road). And then there is the new one that lies on a small man-made island, just off the coast.
Amager Beach is a Blue Flag awarded beach. The blue flag is a worldwide recognized symbol, that indicates top notch quality with regard to the environment, security, facilities and information.
The man-made island was built in 2004-05. It's two kilometers long and faces the strait of Øresund between Amager Island and our brother country Sweden.
Between the new island and the old beach there is a wonderful lagoon, about 400 meters wide at the broadest point.
That's where you find the children’s beaches with shallow water, and also a 1000 meter lane for swimmers and rowers.
From the island there is a great view to the Swedish coast and also to the Øresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden.
What you see in the picture above is the the northern part of the island, that's created like a natural sandy beach with low sand dunes.
From central Copenhagen, it only takes seven minutes by Metro to reach Amager Beach. And even less from Copenhagen Airport - only three minutes.
From the Metro station, Amager Strand (strand = beach), there is a five minutes walk down to the old beach.
As the distance from central Copenhagen to the beach is just five kilometers, many Copenhageners prefer to ride their bikes to get there.
The wooden bridge you see in above picture is the one that leads from the old beach - across the lagoon - to the northern part of the new island. The bridge is for pedestrians and cyclists only.
There are two other bridges leading to the island. One of them is for cars also. That's the Lagoon Bridge, leading to the southern part of the island.
Amager Beach buzzes with life in summertime, when lots of people come here for beach fun and activities like swimming, diving, kayaking, kite surfing, rowing, skating, beach volleyball and much more.
On the island there are beach houses with refreshment kiosks, toilet facilities and showers. The beach houses are placed along the coast, and from the rooftops you have a great view over the island.
Marked beach areas are monitored by lifeguards from May to September.
If you follow the path through the northern beach you get down to the so-called city beach at the southern end of the island.
The long, winding path is highly popular among walkers, runners, roller skaters and cyclists.
The city beach that you see in above picture is located at the southern end of the new island.
And contrary to the natural looking beach area at the northern end, this part of the island is laid out more like a park with grassy areas, a long promenade and a broad sandy beach.
The promenade is very nice for a stroll along the coast. In summertime you can buy yourself a cup of coffee, ice cream, or something to eat at the various kiosks.
The south beach also has a small marina, from where you can walk directly to the mainland, where you'll find two very popular parks - Femøren and Tiøren - for recreational activities.
And also the Metro, that will take you to the center of Copenhagen in just a few minutes.
There are more than three hundred car parking places, and room for about 5,000 bicycles in bicycle racks around the area.
However, on weekends with great beach weather and thousands of visitors this is not sufficient, and then you'll see bicycles parked all over the place - except on the beaches.
For the same reason you are advised to leave your car at home on such days, because car parking outside the parking area is not allowed.
The white sand beaches and the lagoon on the man-made island, as well as the old beach along Amager Strandvej, are all part of Amager Beach Park, which also comprises the two popular parks, Femøren and Tiøren.
The whole of Amager Beach Park is a protected recreational area - and certainly worth a visit or two, if you are only here on vacation.
